Samsung - Samsung N130 Review
I've had this Samsung N130 for over 3 months now and I am still impressed. First off, it's not perfect, but for the price and my personal usage, it does everything I need. And overall very well. This is my first netbook, and I had researched many sites/reviews on all the majour brands, even almost bought an Acer. However, when I saw this one on sale at BB for 9, I decided it was the best thing for me. Up to that point I was set on buying a netbook w/XP b/c I had read that that was the best OS for such a small machine, but when this came w/Windows 7 (Starter) I felt it was the logical choice seeing how Microsoft is fazing out XP. And, I'm very happy I change at the last moment! Windows 7 seems to run flawlessly on this N130, no majour lags, boot times are faster than my old Dell w/XP, so I am very sastified w/Win7. I seem to get all the features I used to have on my old laptop but in a smaller screen, no noticable loss in quality.
In terms of the machine itself, everything is laid out perfectly--for me. My hands are small so no problems w/the keypad, easy to ajust the font and screen size, super quiet! As light as all other netbooks w/a 3 cell battery, and the overall build quality is top notch. I read that some said it feels "plasticky", I beg to differ. It has a solid feel and doesn't smudge. I usually hook up a mouse but the mouse pad gives me no problems; however, I will say that those w/large fingers may find it a very small surface area to work with.....
The speakers are o.k. but remember it's a small machine not a stereo. When I want to listen to my music, I simply hook up an external speaker and the sound is very nice. The webcam works well and takes good photos. Battery life is only 3 hours, which isn't great but I don't mind. I could buy a 6 cell pack but would lose the portabiltity factor AND would have to shell out more which would defeat my primary purpose of an "inexpensive" netbook.
My only negative is the video quality when I try to watch videos online. No problems when I use Media Player, but when I try to watch a newscast video, like NFL highlights, too choppy and not sychronized w/the audio. In defense, it seems to happen in some sites and not others. I'm not sure if getting a 2 gb memory upgrade would improve this, but yeah, the video quality does annoy me.
So, for those looking for an inexpensive, well built netbook, I'd definitatly recommend this Samsung N130. It surfs well (minus some online video sites) and is easy to use.
I don't think you'll find a better machine w/all these features--at this price.
